MY STORY
A Journey of Family, Loss, and Leadership
I am a professional public speaker and published author. Speaking has been part of my professional responsibilities for a large portion of my professional career. I am married with three grown children, all of whom are off of the payroll and also off the cell phone plan. Many life stories often have some level of tragedy and mine is no different. Our family consisted of five children, and two parents. Dad worked in a local DuPont plant, while Mom worked part-time at a local department store when she could. There was always food on the table. Dad served in WWII and kept the military haircut throughout his life. Dad was firm, Mom was there to help with homework, and both were always at any of our athletic or extracurricular activities.
Tragedy struck when I was eight, our older brother George was killed in the Vietnam war. This was very devastating to our family to say the least, and one that changed all of us--forever. How our parents kept it all together was no easy task. George was the second child born and first boy, who like our dad was a terrific sportsman, wood worker, and had an infectious smile. After high school graduation George went to work for a local company, prior to being drafted. Was only in Vietnam a mere four months before his body came back home. As a result of this, our parents insisted that the rest of us were to all go to college as Dad did not want to lose another child to war.
